Simon family × Red Lion

There's chimney cake you eat and forget, and then there's the Simon family's chimney cake. The family business has been baking it to grandma's recipe since 2008: in 2025 they won a gold rating, an audience award and more, and in 2026 they were named Székelyland's Chimney Cake of the Year for the second time. On 24–25 October they're moving into the Red Lion: chimney cake baked fresh over the embers, special flavours and a touch of Transylvanian atmosphere, so you don't have to travel all the way to Transylvania for a really good chimney cake.

The pub

Secrets of the Red Lionpast and present in the heart of Szentendre

Among the cobbled streets of Szentendre's old town there are places you simply can't walk past. At the foot of Szamárhegy, at Szerb utca 4/b, you'll find the Red Lion Pub BBQ & Grill, where the spirit of old Szentendre meets the warm, welcoming world of pub life.

The walls, winding lanes and old cellars of the neighbourhood echo the town's centuries-old past. Szentendre's history was shaped by the meeting of many cultures, and something of that rich heritage can still be felt today, as if the stories of the old days were still hiding between the cobblestones.

Step into the Red Lion's courtyard and a Mediterranean mood greets you: flowers, cobblestones and old walls create a tiny hidden oasis in the heart of town. Inside, an authentic Irish pub awaits, with characterful wooden furniture, leather sofas, special rums, premium whiskies and the legendary Guinness.

Alongside the drinks come smoky BBQ dishes and grill specialities, and good company makes it easy to stay a little longer. Because there are places you don't just drop into for food or a drink, but because it simply feels good to be there. Places where a conversation becomes a memory and an evening becomes a story.

Red Lion Pub BBQ & Grill – where the spirit of old Szentendre, the Mediterranean way of life and the soul of an Irish pub come together. A hidden little world at the foot of Szamárhegy, whose stories you can now help to write.

Meet the team

Who we are

A pub is only as good as its people. They're here for you every day from noon.

Tamás Soós, the chef, at the grillchef

Tamás Soós

I joined the world of hospitality in 2019, and since then the kitchen has become almost a second home to me. Over the years I've worked in all kinds of places, from a four-star hotel to street food, so I've picked up a wide range of techniques, flavours and approaches. I've taken part in several BBQ competitions, and the world of smoke, embers and slow-cooked meat is especially close to my heart. I feel most at home in Székely and Italian cooking. For me, good hospitality is simple: honest food, bold flavours, a great atmosphere and plates that send guests away from the table with a smile.

János Falvai, the manager, beside the grillmanager

János Falvai

I'm János Falvai, though many people know me as Giovanni. The years I spent in Transylvania and Sicily shaped my taste, my approach to cooking and what I think hospitality means. I love bold flavours, daring pairings and creative ideas that give traditional dishes a new face. At the Red Lion Pub Grill & Barbecue I build on these experiences, bringing them together with the smoky world of grilling and barbecue, with plenty of passion and a pinch of humour. What matters most to me is that everyone who walks in eats well, feels at home and is happy to come back. Because I am the menu!

Tamás Soós, the bartender, pouring a Guinness at the barbartender

Tamás Soós

I'm the one who has spent the last 31 years on the other side of the bar – and I'm still not bored of it. Mind you, after all these years it would be hard to claim it's just a passing phase.

Rum and whisky are old loves of mine. I know them, I love them, and yes, now and then I taste them too. Occupational hazard. Beer is a hobby of its own – so much so that I like hiking too, ideally finishing with a beer in my hand.

As for cocktails, I like to make them fast and make them well. With me, the shaker isn't decoration, it's a working tool.

I won't try to talk you into anything. I know what I'm pouring into your glass, I know how a good drink is made, and I also know when all there is to say is: “Cheers!”

31 years of experience, a little cheek, good drinks and a still-steady hand.
I'll be here behind the bar. Leave the rest to me.
